Scientific Advisory Board

Members of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI), which include scientific leaders in fields such as high-performance computing, biology, bioinformatics, and nanotechnology/engineering, serve as scientific advisors for the Institute. They provide regular external reviews of research strengths as well as guidance on new strategic scientific initiatives and funding opportunities.

The board members are:

Stephan Bieri

Chairman

Stephan Bieri is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute. He started his career in the public sector and, for many years, gave lectures and graduate courses at the University of Zürich focused on economics and planning theory.

From 1984 to 1995, Dr. Bieri was Chief Executive Officer of a large utility and President of an international general contractor. He subsequently became Chief Executive Officer and Vice President of the ETH Domain, a leading university system. Since 2004, Dr. Bieri has been engaged in evaluation and strategic consulting mandates for organizations in the public and private sectors.

Dr. Bieri also chairs the University Council of the University of Bayreuth, Germany. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics.

William J. Feiereisen

Strategist for High Performance Computing, Intel Corporations HPC World Wide Business.

Dr. Feiereisen’s research focuses on computational fluid dynamics, high-performance computing and mission-oriented projects.

John Minna

Director, Hamon Center for Therapeutic Oncology Research; Professor Internal Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Minna is a specialist in lung and astronaut cancer.

Mikael Ørum

Founder & Partner,  Ventac Partners

Mr. Ørum holds more than 30 years of executive experience in the biotechnology and finance sectors with a proven track record in identifying business opportunities, developing and executing strategic business plans, fund raising, and international deal making.

Mike Vorster

David H. Burrows Professor Emeritus, The Charles Edward Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech

Dr. Vorster's areas of interest include: dispute review boards, mentor programs for small disadvantaged businesses, and construction equipment methods and economics.

Robert Walters

Vice President for Research, Virginia Tech, Professor of aerospace and ocean engineering, College of Engineering, Virginia Tech.

Dr. Walter's research focuses on computational fluid dynamics and algorithm research.
