Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site: Microbiology in the Post Genome Era | http://microbiologyreu-ret.vbi.vt.edu/
A 10-week summer research training program for undergraduates that focuses on a wide range of microbiological phenomena. The program integrates the application of state-of-the-art genome-based technologies for fundamental and applied research projects in microbiology.
Fundamental: origin of life, environmental limits of life, roles in biosphere, basic cellular processes, cell-cell communication and multi-cellular structures, quorum sensing, development of epidemics, mechanisms of pathogenicity, host-pathogen interaction, ecology, and geomicrobiology. Applied: production of biofuels and chemicals, bioremediation, development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics, and detection and prevention of microbial contamination in the food supply.
Who should attend: Current undergraduates interested in microbiology who are US Citizens & Permanent Residents. Underrepresented minorities and students from smaller institutions are encouraged to apply. Undergraduate students should be interested in pursing graduate degrees in the future.
The program provides a stipend of $4500, travel to and from the site, and room and board ($7,500 monetary value).
2012 Program Dates: May 28 - August 3
The application deadline is January 31, 2012.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site: Modeling and Simulation in Systems Biology (MSSB) | http://biomath.vbi.vt.edu/
The intellectual focus of the program is mathematical systems biology. Specifically, students’ 2012 research projects will include research projects in two different but related areas: (1) Mathematical modeling of mammalian iron metabolism. (2) Mathematical algorithms and software for modeling and simulation in systems biology. The program is hosted at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech.
VBI is a multidisciplinary research institute integrating quantitative and experimental approaches to biological systems.
The application review process will begin on February 6, 2012 and will continue until all student positions are filled.
2012 Program Dates: May 30 - August 3
The application deadline is February 6, 2012.

2012 MBI Undergraduate Summer Research Program | http://www.mbi.osu.edu/eduprograms/undergrad2012.html
The goal of this MBI NSF-funded program is to introduce students to exciting new areas of mathematical biology, to involve them in collaborative research with their peers and faculty mentors, and to increase their interest in mathematical biology. The program consists of three parts - each including a mix of educational and social experiences:
• A high quality two-week program at MBI (at Ohio State) designed to introduce students to a variety of areas in mathematical biology (May 29 - June 8, 2012).
• A personalized six-to-eight week research experience (at one of the seven partner universities, including the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute) that allows students to delve in depth in a particular topic. Research topics that will be focused on at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech, include: (1) Mathematical modeling of mammalian iron metabolism and (2) Mathematical algorithms and software for modeling and simulation in systems biology.
• A one-week conference at MBI featuring student reports on their projects (August 13-17, 2012).
2012 Program Dates: May 29 - August 17
The application deadline is January 31, 2012.

VBI Undergraduate Scholars Program | http://usp.vbi.vt.edu/
In keeping with the Mission, Vision and Values of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, the institute is hosting an Undergraduate Scholars Program that will provide undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and/or course credit working with VBI research groups under the direction of experienced transdisciplinary scientists. The program will equip undergraduate students with the kind of research and/or laboratory skills that cannot be gained merely in a classroom setting, while immersing students in cutting edge science and technology environments. Students interested in pursuing graduate degrees will find this type of research experience invaluable in the process of further refining and developing their career interests.

Global Summer Research Institute (GSRI) | http://gsri.vbi.vt.edu
Designed to build experience for application to graduate school, this 10-week intensive summer program will immerse foreign undergraduate students in a team science research project with one or more research groups at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI). Participants will work in an integrated interdisciplinary team. In addition to research activities, there will be an opportunity to participate in workshops on leadership, presentation skills, team building, and writing skills. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with others who are also participating in summer research programs at VBI. See the Global Summer Research Institute website for more information.

MAOP (Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program)

The mission of the MAOP program is to encourage and support the academic achievements of a diverse student body from Virginia Tech and other institutions across the nation. Programs and activities serve students from the pre-college through the doctorate level with a continuum of financial, academic, emotional, and social support, as well as research opportunities. VBI participates in the MAOP program by sponsoring and/or hosting summer research internships for undergraduates.
Please visit the MAOP site for more details on how you can apply to the program.
