BLACKSBURG, Va., Dec. 16, 2011 – Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) researchers led by Dr. Bassaganya-Riera, Professor of Immunology at VBI and Director of the Nutritional Immunology and Molecular Medicine Laboratory (NIMML), returned from the Modeling Immunity for Biodefense (MIB) annual meeting galvanized to launch into Year Two of the Center for Modeling Immunity for Enteric Pathogens (MIEP) program. The MIB annual meeting also included other modeling centers such as the Center for Computational Immunology at Duke, the Program for Research on Immune Modeling and Experimentation at Mount Sinai/Yale, and the Center for Biodefense Immune Modeling at Rochester.

BLACKSBURG, Va. , Nov. 11, 2011 – Researchers led by Stephen Eubank, Ph.D., at Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) will engage visitors in simulating the spread of a contagious outbreak of Hokie Fever during the university Open House event on Saturday, November 12, 2011 from 10am to 3pm. Virginia Tech's famous head coach Frank Beamer will act as the source point for Hokie Fever.

Center for Modeling Immunity to Enteric Pathogens releases revolutionary software

BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 5th, 2011 - Researchers from the Center for Modeling Immunity to Enteric Pathogens (MIEP) at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute have released an upgrade to the revolutionary ENteric Immunity SImulator (ENISI) software. ENISI models immune responses to beneficial and harmful bacteria that enter the gastrointestinal tract (GI) of mice, pigs and humans. ENISI allows users to create enteric systems such as the gut-associated mucosal immune system in silico, providing a better glimpse of how the immune system responds to pathogens that invade the bacteria-rich environment of the gut.

Marathe named George Michael Distinguished Scholar

BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 26, 2011 -- Madhav Marathe, Ph.D., deputy director of VBI’s Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory (NDSSL) and professor of computer science at Virginia Tech, has been named the first George A. Michael Distinguished Scholar by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Professor Marathe is a recognized expert in interaction-based modeling and the simulation of large, complex biological, information, social and technical systems. The award recognizes Marathe for his expertise and contributions to the rapidly evolving field of network science. The scholarship will foster long-term collaboration on a topics of mutual interest that lie at the intersection of network science, high performance scientific computing and inter-dependent socio-technical systems between LLNL and NDSSL.
